10 Tips for Food Video Content Creation: Styling
To get the most appetizing and beautiful foodie videos, there are many hacks creators use that have become tried and tested staples. Here are some tips and techniques to help you capture the most mouthwatering videos.
1. Odd numbers create balance
The rule of odds allows the viewer’s eyes to flow more easily. For example: if you want to use lemons as an accent in your shot, try having a group of 3.
2. Start with the largest to smallest
When setting up your shot, start by mapping out the largest props first, then decorate with smaller items in between empty spaces.
3. Leaving negative space
You will likely want to add text or closed captions to your social media video. Leaving some negative space will allow you the freedom to add text and keep your shot looking clean and not busy.
4. Keeping items in place
Something you want to avoid while filming is anything moving around, falling, or shaking unexpectedly. You can use sticky tack to temporarily hold things down while recording.
5. Create water droplets with glycerin
Use a fine mist of 1 part water and 1 part glycerin to achieve a condensation look on bottles, beverages, or fruits. For larger water droplets, use an eye dropper instead.
6. Avoid melting with fake ice cubes
Filming drinks can be tricky because you have limited time before the ice starts to melt. An easy solution for this is getting acrylic ice cubes. Now you will have all the time you need to get the perfect shot.
7. Whipped cream hack
Similarly to the last point, whipped cream also has a short time span to film before it becomes a sad melted pile. You can replace whipped cream with shaving cream, you will just need a piping back to get the desired design.
8. Get more fizz
When it’s time to pop champagne, you may want to extend the amount of time you have to film the fizz. Throw in some salt to get it fizzing more.
9. Get a melted look
To get the most appetizing shots, add a melted look with a heat gun. This works great for chocolate, giving it a shiny glimmer.
10. Maximize product
Stuff bowls with paper towels to maximize your product. If you have your ingredients laid out, it’s nice to have your bowls as full as possible. You can cheat this look by easily stuffing the bottom of the bowl.
