Let's Talk Food Photography

Are you using the same photography styling over and over for your #foodporn? Or, maybe you just feel like you’re stuck in a rut? Luckily for you, today we’ve got some great tips to share that you can use to mix it up!

  1. Photo Subject. This may seem like a no-brainer, but we have to say it: Pick the right subject! When you choose to focus on something that you want to eat and shoot, you will be more excited about the content you are creating and you will be more pleased with the outcome.

  2. Backgrounds. Backgrounds can add such a fun aspect to your photo! Don’t be afraid to experiment with different colors and scenes that will best show off your subject. Keep in mind that you want a background that provides a contrast for the food and/or beverage you are shooting. Consider adding items like packaging, wrappers, or the bags your food came in to share the scene with you followers!

  3. Know Your Angles. Choose natural angles that make sense with the subject when shooting. You wouldn’t shoot from above when photographing a tall stack of donuts; you’d take the picture straight on. The same goes for a flat subject; shoot from above to best capture it best!

  4. Scale and Proportion. Include objects in your photo that will give your followers an idea of the subject size. A piece of silverware, the food in someone’s hand, or an arm reaching are all great ways to give the subject scale and attract the eyes of your followers!

  5. Storytelling. Use your photos to tell a story! Add fun components into the shot like a cheese pull when someone is grabbing a slice of pizza, a yolk break as you cut into your eggs, or your ice cream cone melting down your hand! These add a bit of fun to your photo and will engage your followers more.
