We're Predicting These Food Trends for 2020
What will the new year bring in terms of new food trends? Last year we predicted oat milk, tahini, mushrooms, frozen treats, and foil pack dinners would be the stars of 2019. A few of those definitely had their shining moments (we’re talking about you, oat milk, tahini, and frozen treats - and oat milk continues shining bright in 2020). Take a look at our top food trend predictions for this year, and let us know if you think we are missing something that will be big!
Plant based. Yes, we’re talking meat and poultry, but we also think we’ll start seeing more vegetables and plant based offerings in general. More and more people are adopting the “health is wealth” mindset, which is why we wouldn’t be surprised if more menus expand their plant based offerings and if people start incorporating more plant based eating in their homes (even if they don’t strictly follow a plant based diet).
Cabbage. Could cabbage be the next cauliflower? It’s definitely having a moment right now! With endless ways to prepare it (stuffed, braised, boiled… the list goes on), it’s no wonder that the vegetable is popping up on menus and making a comeback at home.
Coconut based dairy. So many people eat dairy free whether it’s a dietary restriction or choice. Keep an eye out at the grocery store for coconut based yogurt and coconut based ice cream because we think it’s popularity is about to soar.
Alternative sweeteners. In the last few years, we were introduced to agave as a natural alternative to sugar. But that’s not the only alternative sweetener out there! Date syrup, pomegranate syrup, and molasses, are a few that could win over 2020.
Unconventional charcuterie boards. Everyone loves an epic cheese and charcuterie board! We think this is the year people will bring their A game and create nontraditional snack boards, like with candies and other sweet accompaniments.
What do you plan on trying this year?
