New Year, New FTC Guidelines
As our industry continues to expand, there is a guarantee that the FTC will expand their social media regulations. As a reminder, the FTC helps people make informed buying decisions, by protecting consumers from deceptive advertising. Due to the rise of sponsored social media content, these guidelines have been created so influencers remain ethical and follow the law.
Influencers should disclose the following:
If they are being compensated by a brand to mention a product/service
If they receive any kind of perk - free product, discounts, gift cards, etc.
If there is a personal relationship, it must be clearly stated
One of the most important requirements is that influencers properly and clearly disclose a partnership. Before posting content, you should know where in your content the endorsement should go. Review this list from Klear if you need a refresher. And, keep in mind that using abbreviations of any kind is not proper practice and does not follow FTC guidelines. Read this brochure from the FTC for full details on how to comply with their regulations.
